What Does Evidence-Based Math Instruction Look Like?

Grades PK-8

Pillsbury Staughton

Dr. Marian Small

There is growing attention to ensuring that math instruction is built on evidence-based practices. But the real question is the nature of the evidence we seek. What sorts of expectations are appropriate to ensure that we are building the kind of math learning that is most valuable in the 21st century?

We will explore the roles of procedural thinking, conceptual thinking, and problem solving, as well as competencies like communicating, collaborating, and reasoning in guiding math instruction. We will also explore the nature of assessment tools, both formative, and summative, that we should be using to measure student learning.

Reimagining Teaching and Learning in the Secondary Mathematics Classroom

Grades 9-12

Bauer Morehouse

Dr. Lya Snell

In this session, participants will explore new cross-cutting concepts, mathematical and statistical modeling, and interdisciplinary tasks and activities to support phenomenon-based teaching and learning in secondary mathematics classrooms. The NCTM publication, High School Mathematics: Reimagined, Revitalized, and Relevant, will be discussed. Participants will engage in tasks that demonstrate how to make mathematics fun and relevant for students in order to prepare them for future careers. This session will also include discussion on modernized mathematics pathways and courses in high school.
