Designing Meaningful Mathematics for All: UDL Math
Rachel Lambert
Designing inclusive learning environments in mathematics asks teachers to
- notice and challenge deficit thinking about students,
- notice and challenge barriers in the classroom, and
- creatively redesign classroom practices, spaces and systems to increase access.
This talk will introduce UDL Math, which is a specifically mathematical version of Universal Design for Learning, with the perspective of math teacher leaders who may wish to engage teachers in this work. We will explore how to shift mindsets about disability, using powerful ideas such as neurodiversity. In this talk, we will engage in the process of designing mathematics classrooms from the perspective of those at the margins.
We will first understand Universal Design for Learning itself from its roots in Universal Design, a movement by and for disabled designers. We will look at research on one particular group, dyslexic students learning mathematics, and think about how we can redesign math class to leverage student strengths, rather than focusing on student deficits. Activities may include analysis of classroom transcripts, video of inclusive and special education classrooms, and design thinking activities.
The Process, Plan, and Tools For Designing Effective Math Action Plans
Kyle Pearce & Jon Orr
.
In this session for district and school math leaders and coordinators, you’ll learn the 4-stage process to craft a clear, measurable, and sustainable pd action plan that drives student achievement while strengthening teachers' pedagogical content knowledge as well as teachers’ own proficiency with mathematics.
After our full-day workshop session participants will:
- have a clarified and unified vision for mathematics that captures what is essential in learning mathematics in your district or school so that all key stakeholders are aligned;
- know the three most important objectives to focus your pd efforts for the next 3 years;
- have a set of measurable key results that will act as targets to ensure you remain focused on what matters for effective mathematics instruction; and,
- learn and apply models that best support your objectives and can operate under your district or school’s unique constraints; and,
- learn how to strengthen a teacher's conceptual understanding of mathematics around their use of appropriate models and strategies that stretch vertically across grade levels;
- have created targeted support around the one key area that drives the most change in teacher pedagogical practice;
