Join WMC for the Fall Mathematics Proficiency for Every Student (MPES) Conference

Implementing K-12 Mathematical Modeling

According to the Wisconsin Standards for Mathematics (2021), “providing students with regular mathematical modeling experiences from kindergarten through grade 12 is one important way that educators can support students as flexible users of mathematics who see how mathematics can be used to understand their world and the world around them” (p. 221).  Mathematical modeling is a process, which allows students to translate real-world situations into mathematics, solve them using their knowledge, and interpret the results in the context of the problem – making math relevant and preparing students for success beyond the classroom.

Join us for an action-packed day of professional development focused on bringing math to life through modeling. Dive deep with local experts, explore engaging mathematical modeling experiences, and discover how to transform your classroom into a hub of real-world problem-solving!

We are excited to learn with you!

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Erick Hofacker

UW River Falls

Erick is a professor in the mathematics department at UW-River Falls and is currently in his 27th year of teaching. He directs both the undergraduate and graduate mathematics education programs. He trains and prepares math teachers to work in the middle and high school classrooms. Erick teaches courses in mathematical modeling at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Since 2009 he has conducted thousands of hours of professional development projects for K-16 math teachers across the country and in this region on the topic of mathematical modeling, as well as many other areas in mathematics education. In 2021 he chaired the 6-12 committee for the revision of the WI state math standards; and co-lead the work on including math modeling in the standards. Erick was awarded the Distinguished Mathematics Educator Award by the Wisconsin Mathematics Council in 2019.
