Learning the Game, Playing the Game, and Changing the Game: Examining the Role of White Educators in Dismantling Systemic Barriers for Students
Most often, teachers have good intentions for their students. Yet, even the best intentions can be delivered poorly and can be detrimental to student success. In this presentation, we discuss some systemic barriers that exist in mathematics education. These barriers often stem from white supremacy culture and are also deep-rooted in mathematics culture. Once we understand the role that we play in perpetuating and dismantling these barriers, we can begin to make a positive change towards equity. Using Rochelle Gutiérrez’s framework for equity, we discuss ways in which we can empower both our students and ourselves as we move towards a more equitable mathematics experience for all.
