Fluency Doesn't Just Happen Virtual Series

Led by Ann Elise Record

Join us for a dynamic professional learning series designed to deepen educators’ understanding of mathematical fluency and enhance instructional practices across grade levels. This five-session event will guide participants through a comprehensive exploration of fluency within the context of the Wisconsin Standards for Mathematics, emphasizing meaningful strategies and number relationships that support student learning from basic facts to complex operations.

The five virtual sessions will focus on the development of thinking from counting to additive and multiplicative reasoning as well as daily routines, games and activities that can be implemented right away in your classroom.

Session #1: October 22, 2025

4:00 - 5:30 pm Central Time

Fluency Doesn’t Just Happen - Setting the Foundational Ideas and Creating Community

During this session we will be exploring the WI Math Standards including the definition of fluency, unpacking the Wisconsin Standards for Math pertaining to fluency, and exploring the eight Wisconsin math practice standards all while discussing creating classroom environments that support all learners on this fluency journey. These ideas will be woven into all the sessions in the series and form the foundation of all the content and instructional strategies shared.

Session #2: November 18, 2025

4:00 - 5:30 pm Central Time

Fluency Doesn’t Just Happen with Addition and Subtraction - Part 1 (Grades K-2)

We will be doing a deep dive into the contexts that involve addition and subtraction as well as the learning progression of addition and subtraction from counting strategies into additive reasoning.  During this session we will first focus on basic facts and then within 100 using flexible strategies based on number relationships, the meaning of the operations, and strategies based on properties.  Included in this session will also be a variety of models that can make the thinking visible to all learners as well as powerful daily routines, games and activities.

Session #3: January 6, 2026

4:00 - 5:30 pm Central Time

Fluency Doesn’t Just Happen with Addition and Subtraction - Part 2 (Grades 3-5)

We will be continuing exploring the facilitation of moving from counting strategies into additive reasoning with multi-digit numbers, fractions, and decimals using flexible strategies based on number relationships, the meaning of the operations, and strategies based on properties.  Included in this session will also be a variety of models that can make the thinking visible to all learners as well as powerful daily routines, games and activities.

Session #4: February 3, 2026

4:00 - 5:30 pm Central Time

Fluency Doesn’t Just Happen with Multiplication and Division - Part 1 (Grades 3-4)

We will be doing a deep dive into contexts involving multiplication and division as well as the learning progression of multiplication and division from counting to additive (skip counting) to multiplicative reasoning. The focus in this session will be with basic facts using flexible strategies based on number relationships, the meaning of the operations, and strategies based on properties.  Included in this session will also be a variety of models that can make the thinking visible to all learners as well as powerful daily routines, games and activities.

Session #5: March 3, 2026

4:00 - 5:30 pm Central Time

Fluency Doesn’t Just Happen with Multiplication and Division - Part 2 (Grades 4-5)

We will be continuing exploring the facilitation of moving from counting to additive to multiplicative reasoning with multi-digit numbers, fractions, and decimals using flexible strategies based on number relationships, the meaning of the operations, and strategies based on properties.  Included in this session will also be a variety of models that can make the thinking visible to all learners as well as powerful daily routines, games and activities.
