Recipients of the Distinguished Mathematics Educator Awards must be nominated by a colleague. The guidelines for nominations are:
- Fifteen or more years of service in Wisconsin. The Nominee must have been involved in Wisconsin for a minimum of 15 years as a teacher, supervisor, coordinator, or mathematics teacher/educator.
- Active involvement in professional organizations. Evidence of leadership in local, state, or national professional organizations will be considered positively.
- Contributions to mathematics education. The nominee must have demonstrated creative leadership in mathematics education. This may have been through quality classroom teaching, leadership in inservice education, acceptance of responsibility for curriculum changes, sponsoring of student mathematics education or organizations, writing of text materials, contributions to mathematics education journals, or participation as a speaker or presider at mathematics conventions.
- Continued growth as a mathematics educator. The nominee must have maintained a continuing interest in subject matter and pedagogical developments in mathematics education.
- Effect on others. The nominee must have had an inspirational influence on students and/or colleagues in mathematics education.
Nominations for this award may include elementary, middle, secondary, or college teachers of mathematics, coordinators of mathematics, mathematics supervisors, and any other person who has made substantial contributions to the improvement of mathematics education.
